What makes a STEM book actually good
A good STEM book does two things at once. It tells a story or explains an idea clearly enough that a kid finishes it, and it leaves them with something to do afterward: a question to test, a fact to repeat to someone, a reason to build something out of cardboard. Books that only list facts tend to get skimmed once and shelved. The books below hold up to repeat reading, which matters more than any award sticker on the cover.
How to use the age bands below
Kids' reading levels and science curiosity don't move at the same speed, so treat these bands as a starting point, not a rule. A kid who loves rockets will sit through a book written for an older reader if the topic is right. A kid who's bored will put down a "perfect for their age" book in the first two pages. Best STEM books for toddlers (ages 2 to 4)
Baby University board book series by Chris Ferrie. Titles like Newton's Laws for Babies and Rocket Science for Babies take real physics and math ideas, momentum, gravity, counting, and reduce them to a handful of words per page with bold, simple illustrations. They're not teaching a two year old calculus. They're making the vocabulary sound familiar years before the formal lesson shows up in school. Best STEM books for ages 5 to 7
Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty. Rosie secretly builds a flying machine (a "cheese-copter" powered by a fan and an old dress) for her great-great-aunt, and it crashes almost immediately. The book's real payoff is the aunt's reaction: she calls the crash a raging success, because Rosie tried something no one had tried before. It's the strongest read-aloud on this list for teaching that failure is part of engineering, not the end of it.
Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty. Ada traces a mysterious bad smell through her house using an actual process, she forms a guess, tests it, gets it wrong, and keeps going, even after her parents send her to a thinking chair for taking apart the clock. It's a good match for a kid who asks "but why" until a parent runs out of answers, because it treats that habit as a skill, not a nuisance.
Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty. Iggy has been building since he was two, using diapers, mud, and pancakes, and the story turns on him rescuing his class by engineering a bridge out of everyday materials during a field trip gone wrong. This is our own series, so weigh that as you will, but here's the specific case for it: in each story, Willy runs into one real, small problem, a toy that keeps breaking, a leaky roof, a way to get a stubborn pet's attention, and works through it using the actual steps inventors use: ask a question, try something, watch it fail, adjust, try again. Each book ends with a hands-on idea a kid can act on immediately using things already in the house. If your child liked Rosie Revere or Ada Twist, this is a natural next stop, and if one of the other books on this list fits better, that's a fine outcome too.

The Way Things Work Now by David Macaulay. A large reference book covering machines from the wheel to the internet, using detailed cutaway illustrations and a running woolly mammoth character to walk through how each one works. Most kids won't read it cover to cover; they'll pull it off the shelf for years whenever they wonder how a zipper or an engine actually functions.
Who Was Albert Einstein? part of the Who Was...? biography series. A short chapter-book biography covering Einstein's whole life, including his struggles in school and slow start to his career, not just the famous equation, so kids see the setbacks that came before the achievement. The series covers many other scientists and inventors, so it's worth checking which figures your child already knows by name.
Girls Who Code: Learn to Code and Change the World by Reshma Saujani. Mixes comic-panel story chapters with nonfiction chapters that walk through real coding concepts like loops and if-then logic, plus profiles of girls from the Girls Who Code program who built their own apps and websites. Useful for a kid who's expressed interest in games or apps and wants a starting point that isn't a screen.
National Geographic Kids Weird But True series. Books vs. STEM kits: which to buy first
A book teaches the idea. A kit or hands-on activity lets a kid test it. Neither replaces the other, but if you're choosing where to spend first, buy the book. A kid who understands why a triangle makes a bridge stronger gets far more out of a building kit than one who's just stacking pieces at random.
The pairing looks different by age. For toddlers, follow a Baby University title with simple stacking, sorting, or water-play toys already in the house, the goal is just repeating the vocabulary out loud. For ages 5 to 7, follow Rosie Revere or Iggy Peck with a cardboard-and-tape build session, or blocks, right after story time, while the idea of "it failed, now fix it" is still fresh.
